There was a light leak in the tank I processed this in. It burned the one good frame on the roll. Usually I hate stuff like this, its sloppy. But this one kinda works. So it goes.
Happy Sunday.

“Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask ‘how’, while others of a more curious nature will ask ‘why’. Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information.” -Man Ray

This is a series of self-portraits that was inspired by the medium of photography itself. Photographs are always a unique moment in time and the ultimate goal is communication. The decision to photograph oneself brings such a personal atmosphere closer to this goal and allows it to be interpreted by the viewer. This series involved a pinhole cap and and old flash that was used to paint light on the skin. The process was meditative as I waited for the “right” image to appear.  This black and white work is ultimately all about the lighting, something that is key to photography. The way the light fell on the skin created a surreal effect with all these aspects added together. This shows that even in simple subject matter, with simple equipment there is beauty and a story to tell. These quiet moments bring back the fundamentals of photography-of recording light, telling a story and most importantly intuition.

50 Golden Gate

Victor Prieto is the co-founder of DUST Magazine, a magazine that features black-and-white film photography. This is a portraiture series that he photographed, featuring people that lived in his building.

“50 Golden Gate  is about meeting my neighbors, I  wonder about the people that live around me. What are they like? Where do they come from? How long have they lived here? I have become a part of the building’s history, along with the long list of hundreds of previous tenants. I wanted to explore the history of the building I lived in by meeting  the  people that inhabit it.” -Victor Prieto
